A4, Letter, Legal (page sizes)

The three most common PDF page dimensions — A4 (European standard), Letter (US default), and Legal (longer US document size).

Every PDF page has a physical size, expressed in points (1/72 of an inch) internally but shown in millimeters or inches in most applications. The page size affects how the document prints, how it looks side-by-side with other documents, and whether it fits a given envelope or binder.

The three most common sizes

| Size | Width × Height | Usage |

|---|---|---|

| A4 | 210 × 297 mm (8.27" × 11.69") | Default in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, South America |

| US Letter | 8.5" × 11" (216 × 279 mm) | Default in the United States and Canada |

| US Legal | 8.5" × 14" (216 × 356 mm) | US legal documents, contracts, certain government forms |

A4 and Letter are very close in size but different enough that a document designed for one often prints awkwardly on the other (content near the bottom edge may get clipped).

Other page sizes you'll encounter

  • A3 (297 × 420 mm) — twice the width of A4, popular for posters and oversized spreadsheets
  • A5 (148 × 210 mm) — half A4, common for booklets and flyers
  • Tabloid / Ledger (11" × 17") — the US equivalent of A3
  • B5 (176 × 250 mm) — academic and technical publishing

Changing page size

Use Resize PDF to change the dimensions of an existing PDF to a new page size. Content is rescaled proportionally to fit. If the aspect ratio of the new size differs from the original, you'll get margins (letterbox) on two sides.

When converting images to PDF via JPG to PDF, you can pick a standard page size (A4, Letter, Legal) or let the page match the image dimensions exactly.
