Tax season is a PDF game
Every year, tens of millions of taxpayers receive a shower of PDFs between January and April: W-2s from employers, 1099s from banks and brokerages, 1098s from mortgage lenders, K-1s from partnerships, supporting receipts for deductions. Your accountant wants one organized folder; your filing software wants specific fields. PDF Genie covers both paths. Organize and merge everything into a filing-ready packet, OCR any scanned receipts, redact SSNs when emailing documents to third parties, and use the Invoice Extractor to pull deductible expenses out of receipt PDFs.
OCR for scanned receipts
Receipts come as photos and scans. Until the text layer is added, they're not searchable and tools like the Invoice Extractor can't read them. OCR PDF uses Tesseract to add a text layer without changing the visible document — the receipt still looks exactly the same, but now it's machine-readable.
Redacting SSNs before sharing
Emailing a W-2 to your accountant? Your SSN sits in plain text on page one. Redact it before sending — Redact PDF with Auto-detect PII will find the SSN automatically and you approve the redaction. The output is safe to email.
Compressing the whole folder
Uploading to your filing platform or e-mailing to your CPA often hits file-size limits. Compress PDF with the Recommended preset reduces a typical tax-document bundle by 50-70%.
FAQ
Does OCR change how the document looks?⌄
No. OCR adds an invisible text layer beneath the original page image; the visible page is identical. Copy/paste and search now work, but the document looks the same to the human eye.
Can I extract deductions from receipt PDFs automatically?⌄
Yes. Run receipts through OCR PDF first (if scanned), then use Invoice Extractor to pull the amount, vendor, and date — export to CSV for your deduction spreadsheet.
Is my tax data private?⌄
Merge, redact, compress, and organize run entirely in your browser — your tax documents never leave your device. OCR and AI-based tools send extracted text only (no images) and we never store the content.
